SUN AND SKIN CANCER

Some strategies for dealing with skin cancer risks as a result to exposure to sunlight are:

· Move the job indoors if possible.
· Set the job up under shade.
· Put up canopies, tents or umbrellas.
· Rotate workers.
· Change work times, ie, work earlier or later in the day.
· Provide PPE (personal protective equipment). Closely fitting sunglasses around the face which should meet Australian Standard AS1067 - Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacles. Wrap around styles provide the best protection. For supply or further information contact the Cancer Council.
· Have suitable outdoor clothes.
   - Shirts that are loose and long sleeved. Fabric must absorb most of the sun's radiation. Thin, light coloured fabrics won't do this.
   - Long trousers/skirts.
   - If shorts must be worn - wear them to the knee.
   - Use natural cloths like cotton. Should be close weave to stop light getting through.
   - Hats.
   - Sunscreen (SPF +30 or better).
